Key Takeaways

  • Best for: Home Assistant, SmartThings, Hubitat or Zigbee Echo homes
  • Standout: rated plus or minus 1% metering and updates that don't cut power
  • Watch out: no Wi-Fi, so a Zigbee hub is a must
  • Not for: Wi-Fi-only homes, or Apple Home without a bridge

The THIRDREALITY Smart Plug Gen3 is a Zigbee plug with power monitoring that lets your Zigbee hub switch a lamp or appliance and track what it uses. It costs about $15 for one plug or $45 for a 4-pack.

Will it work with your hub?

  • Echo: only Echo models with a built-in Zigbee hub, such as the Echo (4th gen), Echo Hub, Echo Show 10 (3rd gen) and Echo Plus (2nd gen).
  • Home Assistant, SmartThings, Hubitat and Homey are all supported. THIRDREALITY says SmartThings and Home Assistant show its energy statistics.
  • Home Assistant tip: it works with both ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT, and both unlock a metering-only mode that keeps power on for things that should never be switched off, like a fridge.

What’s new in Gen3

Launched in March 2026, Gen3 brings back Gen1’s toggle option and adds alerts when power rises or drops past a level you set. That’s handy for spotting a freezer that stops cycling or a dehumidifier that quits. Skip space heaters; most heater manuals say to plug straight into a wall outlet.

THIRDREALITY Smart Plug Gen3

THIRDREALITY Smart Plug Gen3 review: a Zigbee plug with rated 1% power metering. Which hubs it works with, what's new in Gen3, price and alternatives.

Product Brand: THIRDREALITY

Editor's Rating:
4.4

Pros

  • Factory calibrated and rated to plus or minus 1% accuracy
  • Acts as a Zigbee repeater, so each plug strengthens your mesh
  • Firmware updates don't cut power to the connected appliance
  • About $11 to $15 per plug
  • ETL certified with a 15A rating

Cons

  • Needs a Zigbee hub; it can't connect to Wi-Fi
  • Apple Home and Google Home need the separate Smart Bridge MZ1
  • One owner found its readings no more precise than Gen2's (Home Assistant Community)
  • How much energy data you see depends on your hub

Verdict

The best value for homes that already run a Zigbee hub, with rated plus or minus 1% metering and a stronger mesh with every plug you add. If you don't have a Zigbee hub, get the Tapo P110M for Wi-Fi or the Eve Energy for Thread instead.

Common Questions

How do I reset it?
Hold the on/off button for more than 10 seconds until the LED flashes red, then pair it again from your hub.
Does it need a THIRDREALITY account?
No. With Home Assistant, SmartThings or Hubitat you pair it directly to the hub, with no separate app or account.
Does it keep working if the internet goes down?
Zigbee runs locally between the plug and the hub, so local hubs like Home Assistant and Hubitat keep control. Cloud-based setups like Alexa may lose app and voice control until the internet is back.
