Key Takeaways

  • Best for: Apple Home households with a HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K
  • Standout: fast, local Thread control with no account or cloud
  • Watch out: the highest price per plug here
  • Not for: homes with no Thread border router

The Eve Energy is a Thread smart plug that switches a lamp or appliance and tracks its power use without a cloud account, and it joins Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home or SmartThings through Matter. One plug typically costs $30 to $40, and a 2-pack is about $70.

Will it work in your home?

  • You need a Thread border router that also acts as a Matter hub, such as a HomePod mini, a Thread-equipped Apple TV 4K, a Nest Hub (2nd gen) or an Echo (4th gen). Without one, the plug can’t connect.
  • Energy data outside the Eve app: Eve says its energy features also work in SmartThings and Home Assistant.
  • Android: Eve now lists an Android app (8.1 or later) for Google Home setups, so it’s no longer iPhone-only.
  • Each plug extends your Thread mesh, which helps battery-powered Thread sensors that sit far from the hub.

What it’s good for

Finding standby power hogs and checking old appliances. A device idling at 10W around the clock uses about 88kWh a year, roughly $15 at 17 cents per kWh (estimate). Skip space heaters; most heater manuals say to plug straight into a wall outlet.

Common Questions

Does it keep working if the internet goes down?
Yes, as long as your Thread border router has power. Control runs over your home network, not through a cloud server.
Is there a subscription?
No. The Eve app and its energy history are free.
Can I use it outdoors?
No. It's an indoor plug rated for 32 to 95°F, so use an outdoor-rated plug outside.
