Key Takeaways

  • Best for: Kasa users and mixed Apple, Alexa and Google homes
  • Standout: Matter control plus a detailed energy log in the Kasa app
  • Watch out: energy readings stay in the Kasa app for now
  • Not for: 5GHz-only networks, or anyone who wants a single plug

The Kasa KP125M is a slim Wi-Fi smart plug that switches a lamp or appliance on a schedule and logs how much power it uses, and it works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings through Matter. It’s sold only in packs, at about $30 for two and $50 for four.

What it’s good for

  • Finding standby power hogs: leave a TV, game console or cable box on it for a week and check the idle watts. A device idling at 10W around the clock uses about 88kWh a year, roughly $15 at 17 cents per kWh (estimate).
  • Checking an old fridge or freezer: a few days of readings show its real daily kWh, which you can compare with the yellow EnergyGuide label on a new model.
  • Schedules and timers: lamps, fans, holiday lights and coffee makers. The motor rating is only 1/6 HP, so check a window AC’s nameplate and manual before you put one on a schedule.
  • What to skip: space heaters and anything else that runs near the 15A limit for hours. Most heater manuals say to plug straight into a wall outlet.

Common Questions

Can I use it with Home Assistant?
Yes. Add it through Matter for on/off control, or use Home Assistant's TP-Link Kasa integration, which owners report also reads its energy data.
Can I set a countdown or auto-off timer?
Yes. The Kasa app has countdown timers, auto-off, schedules and an away mode that switches lights on and off so the house looks occupied.
Can I use it outdoors?
No. It's an indoor plug rated for 32 to 104°F. Use an outdoor-rated smart plug for porch or yard lights.
