Standout: Plug-in sharing of an existing dryer outlet
Watch out: EV charging capped at 24A
Not for: Homes with a dryer far from the parking spot
The Splitvolt Splitter Switch plugs into a 240V NEMA 14-30 dryer outlet and lets your dryer and a Level 2 EV charger share it safely. It pauses EV charging while the dryer runs and caps the car at 24A. It sells for about $370 to $410.
What you need before you buy
A NEMA 14-30 dryer outlet close to where you park (Splitvolt sells a 10-30 version for older outlets).
A Level 2 EV charger with a 14-30 plug or adapter, set to 24A or less.
No electrician: it plugs in.
Why it can replace a panel upgrade
A new 50A EV circuit can push a full panel past its limit. Sharing the dryer circuit adds no new load, since the dryer and car never draw power at the same time.

Verdict
The Splitvolt is a clever, safe way to get Level 2 charging from a dryer outlet you already have, often saving the cost of a new circuit or panel upgrade. Charging tops out at 24A, so if you can add a dedicated 50A circuit, a 40A charger will be faster.
