Key Takeaways

  • Best for: homes with a room that runs hot or cold, and Alexa users who want voice on the wall
  • Standout: a SmartSensor, radar occupancy and an air quality monitor all come in the box
  • Watch out: the speaker is tinny, and Siri needs an Apple home hub
  • Not for: 120V or 240V electric baseboard heat, or buyers under $100

The ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium is ecobee’s top thermostat: a touchscreen model with a room sensor in the box, radar occupancy sensing, an air quality monitor and Alexa built in. It lists at $259.99, and sales at major retailers often bring it close to $220.

Will it work with your system?

  • Low voltage only: it runs 24V systems such as gas or electric furnaces, central AC, heat pumps, boilers and fan coils. It won’t run 120V or 240V electric baseboard heat.
  • Heat pumps: up to 2 heat and 2 cool stages, plus 2 stages of backup heat.
  • Extras: it can also control one humidifier, dehumidifier or ventilator.
  • Not sure? Snap a photo of your current thermostat wiring and run it through ecobee’s online compatibility checker before you buy.

How much it saves

ecobee claims savings of up to 26% on heating and cooling. ENERGY STAR puts the average for certified smart thermostats closer to $50 a year. At that rate, the Premium would pay for itself in about 4 to 5 years (my estimate). Many utilities offer rebates that shorten that, so check yours before you buy.

Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium

ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium review: SmartSensor, radar, air quality monitor and built-in Alexa. Compatibility, real price, savings and alternatives.

Product Brand: Ecobee

Editor's Rating:

Pros

  • Comes with a SmartSensor that measures temperature and occupancy in a second room
  • Alexa built in, so you can use voice control without a smart speaker nearby
  • Built-in air quality monitor shows VOC and estimated CO2 levels
  • Power Extender Kit in the box for homes without a C-wire
  • Works with Alexa, Apple Home, Google Assistant and SmartThings

Cons

  • Built-in speaker sounds tinny, so it's poor for music (Tom's Guide)
  • Siri control needs an Apple home hub such as a HomePod mini (Tom's Guide)
  • Air quality readings can't trigger fans or purifiers on their own (Tom's Guide)
  • Costs about $60 more than the Enhanced, which shares the same screen and radar

Verdict

The ecobee Premium is the most complete thermostat here, with a room sensor, air quality alerts and Alexa all in one box. If you don't need built-in voice or air quality readings, the Enhanced does the same core job for about $60 less.

Common Questions

Can I add more room sensors?
Yes. Extra ecobee SmartSensors are sold separately, usually in 2-packs, and pair with the thermostat in the app.
Can I turn off the microphone?
Yes. You can mute the microphone on the thermostat so it stops listening for the wake word.
Does it work if my Wi-Fi goes down?
Yes. It keeps running your schedule and you can change the temperature on the touchscreen. Only app and voice control stop until Wi-Fi returns.
