Key Takeaways

  • Best for: Drivers who want fast charging and off-peak scheduling in one app
  • Standout: Adjustable 16A to 50A, so it fits small and large panels alike
  • Watch out: Full 50A needs the hardwired version on a 60A circuit
  • Not for: Anyone who wants the cheapest no-frills charger

The ChargePoint Home Flex is a Level 2 home charger you can set anywhere from 16A to 50A, with an app that schedules charging around your utility’s cheapest hours. ChargePoint’s list price is $549, and on Amazon it’s now sold by third-party sellers.

Can your home handle it?

  • Full 50A: needs the hardwired version on its own 60A, 240V circuit, because EV charging is a continuous load. That adds up to 37 miles of range per hour, depending on how much power your car can accept.
  • Plug-in: the NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 version tops out at 40A on a 50A circuit.
  • Smaller panel: set it to 32A, 24A or 16A in the app to match a 40A, 30A or 20A circuit.

What the app does

Link your utility rate plan and the app sets a charging schedule for your cheapest hours. It also sends plug-in reminders and tracks energy, cost and miles added for home and public ChargePoint sessions.

ChargePoint Home Flex review: adjustable 16A to 50A, off-peak scheduling in the app, specs, pros, cons and how it compares to Grizzl-E and Wallbox.

Product Brand: ChargePoint

Editor's Rating:
4.3

Pros

  • Adjustable from 16A up to 50A (12 kW) hardwired, so it fits almost any panel
  • Plug-in (NEMA 14-50 or 6-50) or hardwired versions, J1772 or NACS connector
  • App uses your utility rate plan to set up an off-peak charging schedule
  • ENERGY STAR certified and UL listed, with a 3-year warranty
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz) plus Bluetooth for setup

Cons

  • Costs more than simpler 40A chargers like the Grizzl-E Classic
  • Enclosure is Type 3R, not Type 4, so less protected from driving rain (EnergySage)
  • No power sharing between two chargers on one circuit (InsideEVs)
  • Some owners report Wi-Fi drop-outs and slow support (Mach-E Forum owner threads)

Verdict

The Home Flex is the charger to get if you want full 50A speed and an app that times charging to your cheapest electricity rates. If you just need a reliable 40A charger and don't care about an app, the Grizzl-E Classic does the job for less.

Common Questions

Can I install it myself?
The plug-in version can go into an existing NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 outlet on a dedicated 50A circuit, where it charges at up to 40A. The hardwired version, and any new circuit, should be installed by a licensed electrician.
Does it work with a Tesla?
Yes. Teslas charge on J1772 with the adapter that comes with the car, and ChargePoint also sells a NACS-plug version.
Do I need a ChargePoint subscription?
No. ChargePoint doesn't list a subscription for the Home Flex; you pay for the charger, installation and electricity.
