Key Takeaways

  • Best for: a tough, low-cost 40A charger with no app to manage
  • Standout: rugged aluminum case and a price under $400
  • Watch out: no Wi-Fi, so no usage data or remote control
  • Not for: owners who want smart scheduling or 48A charging

The Grizzl-E Classic is a 40A Level 2 home charger in a metal case, with no app and no Wi-Fi: you plug in the car and it charges. On Amazon it has been selling for about $300 to $400.

Can your home handle it?

  • Full 40A: needs its own 240V, 50A circuit, because EV charging counts as a continuous load.
  • The outlet: it ships with a NEMA 14-50 or NEMA 6-50 plug, so order the one that matches your outlet. Have a licensed electrician install a heavy-duty outlet if you don’t have one.
  • Smaller panel: it can be set to 32A, 24A or 16A to fit a 40A, 30A or 20A circuit.
  • Off-peak rates: with no app, use your car’s own charging schedule to start after rates drop.

How fast it charges

At 40A (9.6kW), expect roughly 30 to 35 miles of range per hour. At 32A, about 25 miles; at 24A, about 19. Estimates assume about 3.3 miles per kWh; many EVs cap home charging at 7.7kW to 11kW, so your car’s onboard charger may be the real limit.

Product Brand: Grizzl-E

Editor's Rating:
4.4

Pros

  • One of the cheapest full 40A chargers from an established brand
  • Aluminum case rated UL Type 4 for indoor or outdoor mounting
  • Cable stayed fairly pliable at -9°F in cold testing (EVChargingStations.com)
  • Nothing to set up: no app, account or Wi-Fi needed
  • UL certified and Energy Star rated

Cons

  • No app, so no usage tracking, cost reports or remote control
  • Heavy at about 22 lb, and the thick cable is a bit clumsy (EVChargingStations.com)
  • Connector feels plasticky next to pricier chargers (EVChargingStations.com)
  • Tops out at 40A; no 48A option for faster-charging EVs

Verdict

The Grizzl-E Classic is the pick if you want reliable 40A charging for under $400 and nothing to set up. If you want cost tracking, remote scheduling or faster than 40A charging, spend more on a smart charger like the ChargePoint Home Flex.

Common Questions

Does it restart on its own after a power outage?
Yes. Independent testing found it resumes charging automatically when the power comes back, so an outage overnight won't leave you with a flat battery.
Does it work with a Tesla or other NACS-port EV?
Yes, with a J1772-to-NACS adapter. Many Teslas shipped with one, and adapters sell for about $50 to $200. Grizzl-E also sells a Classic Connect version with a NACS plug.
Do I need a permit for a new 240V circuit?
Usually, yes. Most US cities and counties require a permit for a new 240V circuit or outlet, and your electrician normally pulls it.
