Key Takeaways

  • Best for: ecobee-level control for buyers who already own smart speakers
  • Standout: held temperature within one degree across a wide range in lab testing (Reviewed)
  • Watch out: no room sensor in the box and no built-in microphone
  • Not for: two-wire heat-only systems or electric baseboard heat

The ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced is ecobee’s mid-range model: the same touchscreen and radar occupancy sensing as the Premium, without the built-in speaker, air quality monitor or included room sensor. It lists at $199.99, and Amazon often has it for about $180 to $190.

Will it work with your system?

  • Low voltage only: it runs 24V furnaces, central AC, heat pumps and boilers, but not 120V or 240V electric baseboard heat.
  • Heat pumps: up to 2 heat and 2 cool stages, but only 1 stage of backup heat. If your system has 2 aux stages, look at the Premium.
  • Two-wire heat-only systems: Reviewed found it isn’t compatible with them, even with the included Power Extender Kit.
  • Not sure? Photograph your current wiring and run it through ecobee’s compatibility checker.

How much it saves

ecobee claims up to 26% off heating and cooling. ENERGY STAR puts the average for certified smart thermostats near $50 a year, so the Enhanced would pay for itself in roughly 4 years (my estimate). A utility rebate can cut that sharply.

Verdict

The Enhanced gives you ecobee's core strengths, accurate temperature control and broad smart home support, for about $60 less than the Premium. Pick the Premium if you want a room sensor and Alexa in the box, or the Sensi Lite if you only need the basics for under $90.

Common Questions

Can I add an ecobee room sensor later?
Yes. SmartSensors are sold separately and pair in the ecobee app, so you can start with the thermostat alone and add rooms later.
Does it need a subscription?
No. Scheduling, the app and smart home control work without one. ecobee only charges for its optional home security service.
Can I install it myself?
Most people can, using the app's step-by-step guide. If your wiring doesn't match the app's diagrams, call an HVAC technician.
