Key Takeaways

  • Best for: a compact smart charger in a tight garage
  • Standout: tiny size with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and power sharing
  • Watch out: the cable stiffens in deep cold, and the price is high
  • Not for: cold-winter regions or buyers on a tight budget

The Wallbox Pulsar Plus is a small smart Level 2 charger, sold as a 40A plug-in model or a 48A hardwired model. It starts at $649.99 from Wallbox, and the 48A version runs up to about $800.

Can your home handle it?

  • 40A plug-in: needs a NEMA 14-50 outlet on its own 240V, 50A circuit.
  • 48A model: must be hardwired on a 60A circuit by a licensed electrician.
  • Smaller panel: the output can be set as low as 6A, so it can match a 40A, 30A or smaller breaker.
  • Placement: the unit is tiny, so it fits between garage doors or beside shelving where bigger chargers won’t.

How fast it charges

At 40A (9.6kW), expect roughly 30 to 35 miles of range per hour. At 48A (11.5kW), about 35 to 40 miles, but only if your car accepts that much. Estimates assume about 3.3 miles per kWh; many EVs cap home charging at 7.7kW to 11kW, so your car’s onboard charger may be the real limit.

Wallbox Pulsar Plus

Wallbox Pulsar Plus review: a compact 40A or 48A smart EV charger. Circuit needs, charging speed, cold-weather caveat and cheaper alternatives.

Product Brand: Wallbox

Editor's Rating:
4.6

Pros

  • One of the smallest Level 2 chargers: about 8 x 8 x 4 in and 4.4 lb without the cable
  • Up to 48A (11.5kW) when hardwired
  • Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth, so the app still works nearby if Wi-Fi drops
  • Power sharing lets two units split one circuit in a two-EV home
  • Sold with a J1772 or NACS connector

Cons

  • Cable turned stiff in deep-freeze testing (EnergySage)
  • Costs about twice as much as basic 40A chargers
  • Some owners report Wi-Fi dropouts (owner forums)
  • Bright LED ring on the 40A model can't be dimmed (EnergySage)

Verdict

The Pulsar Plus is the best choice here if you want a small, polished smart charger and live where winters are mild. In a cold climate, or if price matters most, the ChargePoint Home Flex or Grizzl-E Classic is the better buy.

Common Questions

Does it need Wi-Fi to charge?
No. It charges without an internet connection, and you can set it up over Bluetooth. You need Wi-Fi only for remote control and away-from-home updates.
Can I take it with me if I move?
The 40A plug-in version unplugs and moves with you. The 48A hardwired version needs an electrician to remove it and install it at the new home.
Is there still a federal tax credit for a home charger?
No. The federal 30C charger credit ended for equipment placed in service after June 30, 2026. Many utilities still offer rebates, so check your utility's website before you buy.
