Key Takeaways

  • Best for: Alexa or Google homes that want a basic smart thermostat for $70 to $90
  • Standout: skips the C-wire on most furnace and AC setups, which keeps installs simple
  • Watch out: heat pumps need a C-wire, and schedules are set in the app only
  • Not for: Apple Home users, homes with hot or cold rooms, or baseboard heat

The Sensi Lite is a basic Wi-Fi thermostat from Copeland (formerly Emerson) that lets you run schedules and change the temperature from your phone, Alexa or Google Assistant. It lists at $89.99 and usually sells for about $70 to $90.

Will it work with your system?

  • Low voltage only: it needs a standard 24V system. Sensi says it won’t run 110V or 220V baseboard heat, millivolt systems or proprietary communicating systems.
  • Stages: up to 1 heat and 2 cool, 2 heat and 1 cool, or a heat pump with backup heat. It can’t control a whole-home humidifier or dehumidifier.
  • C-wire: a typical gas, oil or electric furnace with central AC runs without one. Heat pumps, heat-only and cool-only systems need a C-wire, and Sensi sells a kit for that.
  • Wi-Fi: it connects on 2.4 GHz only.

How much it saves

ENERGY STAR says certified smart thermostats save about $50 a year on average. At $70 to $90, the Sensi Lite would pay for itself in under 2 years (my estimate), and sooner with a utility rebate. The savings depend on you: the app has a schedule and geofencing, which uses your phone’s location to ease off heating or cooling when you leave, but no learning or eco mode that adjusts on its own.

Verdict

The Sensi Lite is a solid budget pick if you want phone, Alexa or Google control on a typical furnace and AC setup without running a new C-wire. If you use Apple Home or need room sensors, step up to the ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced, and if you only use Alexa, the Amazon Smart Thermostat costs less.
