Will it work with your system?
- Low voltage only: it runs most 24V forced-air furnaces, central AC, heat pumps and radiant boilers. It won’t run 120V or 240V electric baseboard heat.
- C-wire: it needs one. If your old thermostat has no blue or unused C wire, buy the bundle with the C-wire adapter, which is about $15 more.
- Setup: the Alexa app guides you through installation step by step.
How much it saves
ENERGY STAR says certified smart thermostats save about $50 a year on average. At a $60 to $80 price, the Amazon thermostat would pay for itself in 1 to 2 years (my estimate), and sooner with a utility rebate. The automatic savings come from Alexa Hunches, which can lower heating or cooling when it thinks nobody is home or everyone is asleep.
