Home energy monitors split into two fundamentally different approaches, and which one you end up with changes what questions it can actually answer. Here’s the real difference, beyond the marketing.
How they’re different
A whole-home monitor clips onto your main power lines and uses software — usually machine learning — to guess which appliance is running based on its electrical signature. A circuit-level monitor skips the guessing: it clips a sensor onto each individual circuit you want to track, so every reading is tied to a specific, known circuit rather than an inference.
Setup and accuracy
Whole-home monitors are the easier physical install — often just two clamps — but the software needs time, typically weeks, to learn your home’s devices, and it can still misidentify similar appliances. Circuit-level monitors take longer to install since you’re wiring a sensor to each circuit you care about, but once it’s in, the data is unambiguous: that number is that circuit, full stop.
How much of the picture you get
Whole-home detection covers your entire panel from day one, even circuits you didn’t think to ask about. Circuit-level monitoring only covers what you’ve physically sensored — if you skip the workshop subpanel, you’ll never see it, no matter how the software improves.
Where your data lives
This is a newer dividing line: some monitors are cloud-first, sending your data to the company’s servers for processing and requiring their app to view it. Others are built to run locally — a Home Assistant integration or an on-device web dashboard that works with no cloud connection required for the core features. If keeping your usage data off someone else’s server matters to you, check this before you buy, not after.
Which one fits you
